This project is an immersive mixed-reality experience inspired by the detention history of Angel Island Immigration Station. The audience begins in a controlled, clinical onboarding space, where they undergo a simulated “biometric identification” process. This moment establishes a sense of authority, disorientation, and compliance—quietly placing them into the role of a detained subject. They are then transitioned into a reconstructed detention room, where they can pick up and interact with personal belongings. Each object triggers audio drawn from historical poems and testimonies, allowing fragmented stories of detained immigrants to emerge through exploration rather than linear narration.By shifting between control and discovery, the experience invites participants to physically and emotionally engage with histories of confinement, identity, and uncertainty. Instead of observing the past, the audience inhabits it—assembling meaning through interaction, memory, and presence.
